A web browser is defined as a software application used for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web or Internet. A web page, image, video and other similar pieces of content are considered information resources. They are identified by a URI (Uniform Resource Identifier). Internet users are able to view these information resources due to hyperlinks that are present.
An example of a URI (Uniform Resource Identifier) is http://www.codank.com. HTTP stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol. The prefix of the URI determines what resource to retrieve over the HTTP.
Even though web browsers are meant to access the World Wide Web, they can also retrieve specific information by web servers in private networks or files in file systems.
