It is something that we all do. When we see a commercial ad introducing a new product, such as Google Buzz, what do we do? Majority of the time we head straight to our computers or BlackBerry and search for it. Keyword: search. All marketing, media, and communication direct millions of people from around the globe to the Internet ready to search for information.
Where do we go to find this information? The answer is quite easy – a search engine. Examples of search engines include: Google, Yahoo, and Bing. Google is the #1 search engine on the Internet.
A search engine is designed to search for information on the World Wide Web. According to Wikipedia.org, the search results are normally presented in a list and are commonly called hits. The information may consist of web pages, images, information and other types of files. Keywords and phrases are also included in those listings. Some search engines also mine data available in databases or open directories.
There are three types of search engines:
Primary
Secondary
Targeted
A business should choose the search engine that works best for them. The one they choose should offer advertising opportunities and should boost online visibility.
Factors associated with search engines:
Searching - Once keywords or phrases are entered, the engine examines the database to produce search results.
Crawlers – used to “crawl” from web site to web site creating a copy of written content for later processing by a search engine.
Indexing – grouping or cataloging content into a database.
