Is E-Commerce Recession Proof?

Everybody is affected by a slow economy. Whether your actual income has decreased is another story but it is safe to say that the vast majority of Americans have suffered in some way from a less than perfect economic system. Is E-Commerce immune to a slowing or recessing economy, and what does this mean for you?

E-commerce and Internet sales have been on the rise ever since the Internet first hit mainstream. This day and age, we are able to buy vacations, sporting goods, clothing, electronics, insurance, cars, lawn mowers, and anything else you can dream of. It would make sense for such a huge, varying industry to follow suit with the rest of commerce but studies are showing that this is quite the contrary. Though Internet sales are slowing, in many cases, e-commerce has proven to be quite resilient.

Why does the Internet thrive so well in such a terrible economy? Speculators suggest the idea that with more and more consumers pinching their pennies and trying to find better ways to spend their money, they are turning to the greatest place to find the right price, the Internet. Also, studies have shown that the affluent, being the minority, make up a majority of the Internet revenue. So these groups of people who do not worry about the recession are still spending as if there were no problems.

E-commerce has slowed just like the rest of our economy but it has stilled proved to be extremely resistant in the face of a bad economy. What does this mean for you? This means that you should take advantage of every opportunity you have. People are more and more turning to the Internet and we want you to have a piece of that pie. At CODANK, we offer custom development of E-commerce web sites tailored to whatever you have in mind. Contact us for more information.

Getting Advertisers to Use Your Site

It seems like a great idea to just let a few advertisers post a couple of non-intrusive ads related to your business and move on with a little bit more revenue coming in. It is rarely this simple but with some research and a little bit of time, your website could be generating some significant money.

There are multiple ways to get advertisers to advertise on your website. One of them is Google’s Adsense program. This is the easiest to begin using because its absolutely free and anyone can join. Basically, Google generates ads based on the content of your website. For example, if you have a graphic design company in Charlotte, North Carolina, the companies who pay Google’s Adsense program will have their ads displayed on your site. It will most likely be related ads such as “Charlotte Web Design”, “Graphic Design North Carolina”, or products associated with your industry. Then, the text-based ads are integrated into your website. You have probably seen this; they say “ads by Google” across the bottom. They are usually only mildly intrusive and, depending on where you choose to place them, they can still be very noticeable. The pay structure for this is different than most others. Google pays you per click on their ads. It is not significant per click but if you are bringing in thousands of visitors every day, this is definitely a good option for you.

Another way to get ads on your site is simply asking. Approach companies directly and ask them if they would like a spot on your website. This is a more unpredictable, probably slower way to get advertisers attracted to your site but there are a few things you can do to speed up the process. Consider making a “For Advertisers” page to your site, maybe on your about page or contact page. Then, when you are writing keyword rich articles or blogs, link to that page on the phrase “click here if you want to advertise”. That way, people who are interested in your industry know that you are interested in doing business with them. Sometimes all it takes is asking!

One more way to get these money generating ads is using an affiliate program. This can be slightly more involved but just like most everything else, it can be very rewarding in the end. Basically, you have a link or ad to an affiliate website on your website. Then, when people are browsing your website, they see that ad, which should be closely related to your website’s content, and they follow the link. Now each sale that is made through your site is commissioned to you. So you get a little bit of cash and you get a little bit of credibility by being associated with another site.

All of these options are great ways to start advertising for other people on your website. Some of these are very low stress and low maintenance. Others can be quite involved and complicated. The best way to get started is to talk to somebody with experience in the industry. Give CODANK a call and have that much more insight into getting ads on your website.

Does Your Site Have These?

Every day more and more visitors are drawn to your website. They are navigating through your pages, possibly viewing the products that are for sale online; they’re looking for contact information, and all sorts of other things. Does your site have all sorts of common mistakes throughout causing frustration to viewers or turning them away from your website or possibly even your company? Here are a few common mistakes too look for in your website.

Hidden contact information: Are brand new visitors to your website faced with a maze to find out how to contact you? An ideal setup will either have a phone number or email at the bottom of every page. If this isn’t doable, then a link to a contact page should be visible from everywhere the visitor may go.

Broken Links: Nothing can be more irritating than trying to travel somewhere that doesn’t exist. A successful website is organized and deletes links that are no longer needed or no longer active. This will keep the visitor where they need to be and much less frustrated.

Dead Ends: Have you ever been sent a link to a page that has no means of returning to the home page or the parent page of that particular section of the site? It is a good rule of thumb to always always always have a clearly visible link to the home page and ideally, a link to the last page the visitor was at. People are constantly surfing through sites and often finding they just need to go back to where they started.

New Windows or Tabs: Today’s browsers are all about tabs but that doesn’t mean that you have to employ them. When all of your links open a new window or a new tab, the visitor can easily get lost or confused and just close all of them or accidentally close the important ones. This is also another important reason to link to the home page because ideally, everyone wants to be able to click somewhere without losing all of their previous searching progress but nobody wants to end up with seven windows open from one company’s website.

Excessive font and color: Changing fonts or changing colors throughout your website may be fun and visually appealing as an art project, this doesn’t get things done. An efficient website uses no more than two or three fonts that aren’t hard to read and has an organized color scheme that is mostly out of the way of the important content.

Your Content: There is much to say about content but to make it concise, you want the user to be able to hear what you need to say in a clear and efficient manner. Keep your text short and to the point but make sure that it is still informative. Avoid using technical jargon that the layperson may not know. You may impress them but they won’t know anything new about your company.

All of these principles lend to a more user friendly website. Getting these down may be a daunting task for most people trying to run a business and maintain a website. If your website does not exhibit these characteristics, Codank is here to help.

The Key to Getting Your E-mail Opened

If you are like many companies out there, you are using direct e-mail advertisements to give possible consumers a chance to check out what you have to offer and learn a little bit about your company. If you are also like most of those companies, you are having a constant struggle trying to get said consumers to even give your messages a chance. The subject line is the first thing that the consumer will see so it is obvious why this would be the most important and why it is key to the sale.

The first thing you should know about a subject line is that it needs to read like you would speak to a customer. If you have a North Carolina web design firm and your e-mail reads, “ACT NOW WEB DESIGN AT NEW LOW PRICE” nobody is going to be interested in what you have to say. The more your e-mails appear to be from family, friends, or colleagues, the more likely the consumer is to open it.

After making the subject line seem natural the next most important thing is personalizing it. When a consumer sees their name, they automatically react differently than normal. This is also true with other information such as: their city, occupation, interests, and anything else you have as a resource.

Another important thing to think about is to keep it simple. A short sentence is almost always enough information to get your point across. Studies show that the more creative subject lines read like advertisements to consumers and they simply do not get any attention. It is almost always the more “boring” subject lines that attract people. Phrases like “[COMPANYNAME] Sales & Marketing Newsletter”, or “Website news - Issue 3” were on the top of the most clicked list while phrases such as “Last Minute Gift - We Have The Answer”, or “[COMPANYNAME] Holiday Sales Event” were at the bottom of the list.

To summarize: keep your subject line natural, keep your subject line personal, and keep your subject line simple. This will attract the customer initially and keep them interested after they do open the e-mail. Also, do not forget to make the body of the e-mail correspond with the subject line… it seems simple enough but there are many companies out there with very attractive subject lines that get wasted when a consumer clicks it only to feel tricked.

What’s your name?

The first impression that a visitor to your website will have is your URL or Uniform Resource Locator. For this reason, it is very important that you choose something suitable to your company. You also want the visitor to remember the name of your site and how to get to it. Let’s explore some ways to help decide the URL for your website.
The most important part of a URL is that it reflects your business. Nobody goes to “AfricanSwallows.com” when they’re looking for a used car. There are exceptions to this rule but it is very difficult to attract visitors to your website when the name does not have any correlation to the product or service you are offering. Let’s say you start a web design company Charlotte called “Charlotte Web Design”. Obviously, your first choice will be “CharlotteWebDesignandDevelopment.com”. If this is unavailable, you should seek something similar that is not too long but is still straightforward.

Length and notability are also very important things to consider when looking at a URL. You want your URL to be as short as possible while still maintaining the idea of your company. URLs such as “Google.com”, or “MSN.com” are very easy to remember, not only because they are wildly famous, but also because they are very succinct. When you are brainstorming your URL, make sure it is terse and to the point, this helps the visitor remember the name of your website and dwindles the chance of them misspelling it.

Lastly, consider which extension you want. It is most likely that you want to use a .com address. While there are many out there (.biz, .net, .org,), .com is the most common and the easiest to remember. When you are searching for your URL, .com will be the best choice in almost 100% of cases.

Choosing a good URL can really benefit you in the long run, especially if your business ends up being very well known. A good choice now can lead to many return customers and can add to the overall notoriety of your name. Remember, make it reflect your business, keep it short, and go for “.com”. When in doubt, contact a good company Codank and let our experience in web development and SEO take your URL to its highest potential.

Flash or HTML

When first creating a concept for your web design, it’s always good to have as many ideas as possible. Then when the actual designing of the site occurs, both you and the developer will have an easier experience. One of the major decisions that many are faced with is whether to have a site centered on flash or the more traditional, organic HTML. I’m going to explore some of the differences and hopefully help you decide which is more suitable for you and your business.

The first thing to know about a website designed primarily in flash is that it is very flashy (no pun intended.) I’ve located a good example here at http://www.beckett.de/. This webpage is very impressive. As soon as you reach the homepage, you are greeted with graphics swooping in from the sides and various sounds that correspond with the rollover of your mouse. Once you begin to explore the page, you will notice that with every new page comes a whole new exciting transition with new sounds and graphics. This is a common characteristic of well-designed flash sites. The idea in most cases is to move the conventional website into a bigger experience and thus capturing the consumer. This can be very rewarding but keep in mind that flash sites can be irritating to many viewers. This is often due to loading times, or the time it takes for a flashy transition to be made. Also, flash design is less common than standard HTML so you might have a hard time fitting it into your budget.

HTML is your standard website. To include an example, I decided to link you to http://www.barnesandnoble.com/. As you can see, everything here is exactly what you are used to. It can be decorative and visually appealing at times but for the most part, it is very utilitarian. Everything is well organized just like we’re all used to. This type of design usually never irritates visitors (unless you’ve skimped on the design) and fares well with people who may not be extraordinarily tech-savvy. This is the most common so naturally it will be the easiest to achieve a custom look that you may have in mind.

Deciding between Flash and HTML is usually an easy task for most. HTML is the easiest and most affordable way to go so why break the mold? Then there are the companies that want to do just that… break the mold. For the average user, HTML provides the easiest experience but if you are willing to be a little edgy, Flash can take your website and turn it into a completely different experience.

Google Docs

I’d like to present a scenario for you. Let’s say you are a freelance copywriter with many jobs on your plate. You are editing content for web pages, writing your own advertisements, writing brochures for large companies, blogging for small businesses, and you have a few worker bees to take care of some of the lesser work. Now imagine your Outlook, Entourage, or Mail application’s inbox. Pretty scary huh?

You can imagine how complicated your e-mailing experience can be when multiple attachments are sent to and from your computer everyday. Oftentimes we are revising documents and editing them before sending them right back where they came from creating multiple copies on multiple computers. This type of thing stresses many an e-mailer out there and makes it hard to stay organized when things get busy. Google Docs is definitely the fix for this person.

I came across Google Docs and watched their “Google Docs in Plain Language”. To give a quick summary, Google Docs is a remote place on the Internet that is used for storing any kind of document, spreadsheet, or presentation that you may be working with. Instead of receiving and sending multiple attachments everyday, they can be stored remotely and accessed by any user with the right credentials. This can help everyone be more productive with documents that are constantly being pinballed back and forth with new changes each time. Google Docs makes it easy to do this as well with their “add collaborators” feature. All you need to do is add their e-mail to a list and click “add collaborator” and they will now be able to make changes to the document. All you have to do is pick who can view and notify your client, co-worker, or other where it is stored.

For instance, let’s say you are the editor-in-chief for the state magazine of North Carolina. Many of your employees will be sending in all sorts of documents pertaining to the magazine that may or may not need editing. Now if each of these is handled separately via e-mail attachment, confusion will certainly occur but you know better. You are storing these documents digitally with Google Docs and your employees are logging in and posting their work and you are collaborating right there and they are able to see the finished product. How much more efficient and organized is this?

With Google Docs, you can make your e-mail attachment nightmares a thing of the past and start organizing remotely. This will help productivity and the overall stress load for all who are involved. If you haven’t heard of this tool, explore a bit by checking out some videos or tutorials to see if it’s for you. If not, then what’s the big deal? It was completely free just like all things Google.

Is Your Website Ready for a Makeover?

If you are among the many who rushed to get a website as soon as they realized that the world was becoming digital but have neglected to upgrade or makeover your website, this information is for you. Your website may have separated you from the crowd in the past but times are different and every company who wants to stay competitive is getting in the game. It’s time to upgrade your web presence in the same way you would re-model your restaurant or storefront or update employee training.

Here are a few ways to tell if your website needs a makeover:

• Your last update was over a year ago
• Check the content, does it reflect today’s fast-paced information age?
• Check traffic records to see if the numbers have reached a plateau

Either way you cut it, re-designing your website will be worth the additional money in the budget. Not to mention, prices have been significantly altered since the last time you paid to have a website designed. Also, be encouraged that your newly designed website will have even greater content than it does now. You have already toiled over what content to have on your old website, so it only makes sense that running it through another filter will make it even better.

So go ahead, jump in and make a new persona on the Internet for your company. It can only help increase business and give a fresh perception of your product or service. This is the information age, are you equipped?

After the Traffic Arrives

So you’ve done all the right things. You’ve picked an attractive URL, written mounds and mounds of relevant content, you’ve set up some pay-per-click ads, maybe you’ve even shelled out some big money to have a custom design for your company’s website. Now you have some traffic to worry about.

Now, I’m sure you’ve already worried about these things plenty, but just to make sure, here’s some major things you need to be concerned about when you have plenty of traffic for your website.

1. Simplify your website. Make sure (one more time) that your website has a very clean, very easy-to-navigate interface and welcomes customers with many options of getting around. This holds true especially if your company sells things directly from your website. Make sure that the customer knows how to buy things and provide many different means of paying for the items or shipping them. This can ensure that your website is friendly to all customers.

2. Try using testimonials. It can be a pain to contact a previous customer to ask them to write a review but having legitimate previous customers is invaluable to your reputation plus it will give you a chance to follow up with a customer.

3. Offer something to the customer free of charge. This is an age-old technique that sometimes turns people away but not if you’re smart about it. Offer a trial of your product or service to let the customer have a test-drive. Also, you can offer them information free of charge, which leads to the next point.

4. Publish some of your knowledge and insight on your home page. Not only does this draw people to your sight in the first place, but also by helping the customer out before they’ve spent any money, you’ve already proven that you are on their side. If your company sells sporting goods, write an article that provides tips on how to use certain sporting equipment. If your company mows lawns, provide some knowledge of different types of grass or when to water your grass. By offering up some of your wisdom, you get a chance to help your customers before they spend any money, that way they are much more willing to trust you when they decide to do just that.

Using these tips and a little common sense, I’m confident that you can turn potential customers into loyal customers and that more and more information seekers will turn to you for your service or product. A few things to remember: these are just some of the right things to do when you have traffic coming to your website (don’t be afraid to learn some more!), and never neglect SEO (keep looking for ways to make your content fresh and relevant).

SSL, TLS, and HHTPS: What This Means For You

Every Internet user has had concerns about security at some point in time. It seems, though, that most are more concerned about programs stealing their information by downloading themselves onto their computers than they are concerned about freely giving their information away. They are usually worried about the latest virus, spyware, trojan horse, worm, malware, or adware while there are numerous web pages that take in valuable information without protecting it. It is very uncommon to find someone who does not protect their computer from all these mysterious, dangerous software but it is very common to find one who quickly trusts a website with their credit card or other information. I say all of this to make one point: securing a website is just as important, if not more, than securing your computer.

SSL/TLS is short for Secure Sockets Layer and Transport Layer Security and it is basically the most efficient means of providing data integrity for you and your customers. HTTPS is the prefix that signifies a website that uses SSL. What this means for you is that all forms of communication between the client and the server are safe. It could be anything from sending an e-mail address to forms that hold valuable financial information. The short explanation of how this technology works is as follows: the client and server “agree” on a means of encryption, then encrypted data is sent, and finally the server uses the information to decrypt the files and they are safe in the control of the rightful owner.

If all of this seems like mumbo jumbo to you, that’s perfectly fine… normal even. The main idea to understand though is that SSL is very important, mandatory even, for a website that deals with any kind of forms or other data sent over the Internet. Not to mention the added safety that your customers feel when their browser tells them they are on a secure site and that nobody can take their information. After all, your customer comes first and the absolute last thing you want is to in avertedly spread their valuable information.

I hope this brings a better understanding of why we use SSL/TLS, what it means, and why it is important to bring it to your website. It is vital for websites that deal with valuable customer information to be secured. Some of you might be saying “well great, something else to slow my website down”. Well fear not, securing a website takes very, very little extra time. It is extremely likely to be completely imperceptible if anything.

Google AdWords Keyword Tool

In the world of web development, you may have a hard time coming up with relevant keywords to suit your content. Coming up with keywords is often a time-consuming project and can be very frustrating. Google, with the development of their AdWords program, has put out a tool for all of us in the website business. It’s called the Adwords Keyword Tool and it, just like all things Google, is extremely user friendly. When you find yourself at the Keyword Tool homepage, you have to choose one of two options: enter your text, or type in your URL and let Google search your website. The first option allows you type in a word or a few phrases. Google then returns upwards of 100 other keywords related to yours. Also, Google gives you a rough estimate of how many searches for that particular word occurred last month, an average occurrence and the amount of advertiser competition for a listed search word. Typing in “Charlotte”, for example, returned 150 related terms and 50 additional terms to consider. Some of the suggestions were “Uptown Charlotte”, “Charlotte NC” and “South Charlotte”. If you already have a website and are optimizing its design, then entering your URL may be the better option. Entering your URL returns results of content that is currently on your website and related terms to the ones that Google found. Once you have your results, you can use the suggested words to narrow down the most effective words based on their number of searches for that particular term and the competition from advertisers. Keep in mind, keywords and phrases need to be from the viewpoint of the person who will be searching for your site. For example, if you are looking for a dentist, you would not type in dentistry, but rather dentist. Make sure to take that into consideration when choosing from the generated search terms. Then, you can weave these words and phrases into your website content, articles, blogs and more. Google AdWords Keyword Tool is a free tool that has the potential to be very profitable. It is simple to use, but extremely effective and can help you find the keywords that your consumer will be searching and ultimately draw more traffic to your website. After all, if you are going to say something, might as well say what your consumer wants to hear.

Web Presence: Necessity or Supplement

In today’s world, Internet access is omnipresent. Wi-fi signals are flowing in almost every school, business, and restaurant. People are accessing information from their cell phone, PDA, iPod, notebook computer, netbook computer, Nintendo Wii and anything else manufacturers can build internet technology into. It only makes sense that consumers are becoming more and more dependent on the Internet. When one needs SEO for their website, the average consumer no longer pulls out their telephone book and starts flipping. This holds true even with non-technological products and services. It is becoming more and more natural for consumers to “Google” what they want to find the best service or quality. With this being the case, it is an expectation of the consumer to be able to find information about your product or service and be able to contact someone with knowledge of the same. For this reason, having a web presence is no longer just a supplemental way for consumers to contact you; it is a necessity which business owners should pay a great amount of attention to. Even more important is creating an effective web presence that portrays your company appropriately and markets your product or service in a desirable light. Your website will do great things for you but it can also do a disservice to your company if not designed properly. For example, if a consumer finds it difficult to locate a phone number or e-mail contact on your webpage, they have already had one bad experience with you prior to even contacting you! In the past, the Internet market was a more simple environment where users were new and frankly, more patient. In today’s booming Internet economy, users are no longer willing to navigate cumbersome websites or wait for huge files or pictures to load. Consumers can simply move on to the next business where finding information is more efficient. This is why making an easily navigable website provides the consumers first good impression with your company while advertising your product or service and drawing business to your company. Having a web presence has become the standard of today’s industries. Whether or not your company has anything to do with technology, consumers will be searching the Internet for your product or service. The companies who are prepared with a well-thought out, well-designed web page will be the first to draw the customers in and the others will miss out on their piece of the pie.
