PageRank Algorithm

Your website’s PageRank value is one of the many important aspects of how Google determines which pages to show on their result pages. A low PageRank normally implies that you may have a few problems, while a high rank means that your page contains the necessary key factors. But, PageRank is only a small portion of what Google uses to rank your actual web page.

Search engines, such as Google, use an equation in order to formulate a PageRank. This formula is called the PageRank algorithm. The PageRank algorithm Google uses to rank a web page can be very confusing, and there is no need to even try to figure it out!

Below are a few key points that explain more about how the PageRank algorithm works:

•Once a page has been indexed by Google, it automatically has a “basic” PageRank. It is very small but it is there.
•A web page can only receive a PageRank if it has been indexed by Google. Also, links from other pages that have not been indexed are of no value.
•Linking to another page increase the PageRank of the receiving page.
•You can increase a site’s overall rank by increasing the number of pages in the site.
•The page that receives inbound links gets the greatest PageRank gain.
•By including lots of links, you can guarantee that your PageRank will be well distributed on your web site.
•A page with a high PageRank can forward that to another page only if it doesn’t split the vote by linking to other pages.

Checking on Your Website Listings

You may have recently submitted you new web site to the top search engines, such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing/MSN. It is now time to keep an eye on its progress within each search engine. Generally, you will want to know when it is listed and exactly who is linking to it.

There is a slight chance that your web site will not get listed on one or more search engines. This can be due to:

•A simple oversight
•URL was mistyped
•The search engine found some broken links or other related errors
•Engines have not crawled your web site yet

There are different ways to check on the status of your web site submission at various search engines. Because Yahoo and Google are the two most popular search engines, you will want to keep tabs on them first. But, don’t forget about Bing/MSN because it is quickly growing in popularity as well.

The easiest way to search for your page is to visit each search engine and enter the URL of your main page and other web pages that you wish to check on. For example, to see if Google search engine has listed any web pages for www.codank.com, you would enter the same exact URL into the search box. Also, be sure to check on your competitors in order to see if they are listed.

Being indexed does take some time. It is best to allow 4 to 6 weeks for your web site to appear in search engines before trying to resubmit.

Subscription Field 101

Sending your web site visitors promotional materials can be very beneficial to your business’ success. The best way to collect information from participants is by adding a subscription field on your web site. Many different forms are used by search sites and directories. Majority of these fields ask whether or not a visitor would like to receive information or other promotional material by e-mail or direct mailing.

In order to guarantee that your company receives subscriptions only from people who are truly interested in what you have to offer, it is recommended to place the subscription field in a spot that is easy to be found, use clear wording, and deselect the field by default.

If your web site uses forms that allow visitors to submit comments, sign a guestbook, or enter any other type of data, you should consider adding a subscription field as well.

Below are a few general subscription field questions that would be useful to include:

•Would you like to receive weekly updates from our web site?
•Do you want to receive notifications when this page is updated?
•Can we send you press releases related to our company?
•Can we send you daily highlights of interesting areas within our web site?
•Would you like to receive advertisements and promotional material from our sponsors?

The more information that you ask for, the less likely the visitor will agree to subscribe. It is important to keep it short and simple. Also, be sure to make it as easy as possible for your visitors to sign up.

Creating a Banner Advertisement

Before you can begin advertising, you will need to create a banner first. The banner that you decide to use does not have to be designed by a professional designer, but it should persuade people to want to read it and also click on it. It is common to see other banners with high resolution graphics. But, it is not always the most appealing banner advertisements that attract the majority of viewers.

Information is what draws in the most viewers to a banner advertisement. Without the proper information and content, your advertisement will not be successful. Beware of adding too many graphics because you may not have enough room to include the important information.

Most banner advertisements are restricted to a file size of less than 8KB. When you develop a banner ad, the file size limit should be one of the overriding concerns.

Common in the advertisement world is the option of banner exchanges. Before you are allowed to participate in any banner exchange, you are required to become a member of certain banner exchange web sites. A typical banner size is 678 pixels wide by 60 pixels high. Most web sites set the height and width of the banner to these dimensions. Web browsers normally use the dimensions to resize a non-standard banner, which might distort an image and make it unreadable.

Another restriction let by most banner exchanges is that a banner ad must be a non-interlaced GIF image.

A good banner exchange service to look into is LinkBuddies (www.linkbuddies.com).

Web Browser Importance

A web browser is defined as a software application used for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web or Internet. A web page, image, video and other similar pieces of content are considered information resources. They are identified by a URI (Uniform Resource Identifier). Internet users are able to view these information resources due to hyperlinks that are present.

An example of a URI (Uniform Resource Identifier) is http://www.codank.com. HTTP stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol. The prefix of the URI determines what resource to retrieve over the HTTP.

Even though web browsers are meant to access the World Wide Web, they can also retrieve specific information by web servers in private networks or files in file systems.

Major Web Browsers Used by Most Internet Visitors

•Internet Explorer – founded in 1995
•Mozilla Firefox – debuted in 1998
•Apple Safari – established January 2003
•Google Chrome – debuted in September 2008
•Opera – founded in 1996

Certain web browsers also support a variety of other prefixes, such as https:, ftp: (file transfer protocol), and file: (for local files).

Basic Web Browser User Interface Elements

•Back and forward buttons
•Search Bar
•Address Button
•Home Button
•Refresh Button
•Reload Button
•Status Bar

Web site designers should make sure that a web site is capable of correctly functioning in different types of web browsers. A few aspects of a site may not work the way you intend it to work if it isn’t web browser capable.

Charlotte Web Design Link Tips

It is no secret that links play a valuable part in assisting the boost of a web sites ranking in search engines, such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo. Whether incoming, external/outgoing or internal, all links help you in some type of way. Read over the list below to understand links.

•A link strategy that places a web site as an authority in a web community or neighborhood can be a powerful way to catch the attention of the search engines.
•Links from web pages with a low PageRank can harm your own web site. Be cautious of these sites or you will be punished as well.
•Typically all incoming links to a web site hold some kind of significance.
•Links that your web site content has more in common work best for your ranking.
•The best kinds of links are the ones that include appropriate keywords. These words tell search engines what the referenced web site is about.
•Links from sites related to yours are often more valuable than links from unrelated sites. (Because the relevancy software is almost certainly imprecise, this isn’t always the case.)
•Try to monitor your links for proficient linking.
•When your content changes, be sure to modify links on your web site.
•It is recommended to create a link strategy and a link structure to better increase traffic flow to your web site.
•Hire a professional search engine optimization company if you are unsure about links.

Content Targeted Campaigns

When using the AdWords platform, there are several networks in which a web site owner can use to target a campaign. One specific network is called the content network. Content targeting is pretty much the same as contextual advertising and is a great way to reach a larger target audience with ads.

AdWords is found on Google. When you decide to use the content network, Google scans its network of partner sites and then verifies which are best suited for web sites ads. This is done by examining the content that is found on the web pages within the content network. These particular pages are typically sites about an advertised product, news stories related to a sites keywords, and blogs about similar products.

Benefits of Contextual Advertising

•Diversified advertising channels
•Extended target reach
•Not limited to just Google search results
•Not limited to only displaying text ads
•Ability to choose from image, animated, and video advertisements

When deciding to create a content-targeted campaign, you can either use one of your existing pay-per-click campaigns or simply create a new one specifically targeted to the content network. It is recommended to place proper keywords in specific ad groups and that the ad copy is directly connected to those keywords.

Also, make sure to set different keyword bids for the content network. Be cautious of your budget when paying for any of your advertisements. Campaigns on the content network can easily run the risk of spending a lot of money very quickly.

Buying and Selling Links

It is very easy to monetize your web site without having to worry about any pay-per-click campaigns, sale percentages, or conversion rates. Nowadays, you can simply sell text links. Programs such as Text-Link-Ads (www.text-links-ads.com) and Text Link Brokers (www.textlinkbrokers.com) are available to web site owners who want to sell text links on their site.

SEO professionals and search engines are at odds when it comes down to buying and selling text links. Many believe that it is commonly used to attempt to manipulate or control the search results at Google.com and other search engines. Google has recently begun to filter the purchased links from PageRank.

Text Link Brokers allows you to buy and sell links without leaving any leaving behind any clues of identity once it has been paid for. Along with Text-Link-Ads, the two carefully reviews each potential link buyer and seller previous to acceptance into their networks.

Disadvantages of Buying and Selling Links

•Can be penalized for linking to a “bad neighborhood”
•Web sites are able to report other sites if they have sold or bought a link
•Not able to buy or sell if PageRank is below 4
•Search engines may filter an obviously paid link
•Links do not also help with search engine optimization

Signing up for Text-Link-Ads and Text Link Brokers is free and easy. You need a valid email address and password in order to be accepted for an account. Be sure to consider the factors that listed above before signing up for any of these sites.

The Cost of Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization plays a very important role in the success of a web site. Your overall goal should without a doubt be to draw in as many visitors as possible in order to increase your company’s sales or revenue. Similar to the law of supply and demand, the more popular search engine optimization becomes, the higher the price for SEO professionals will increase.

Having your web site optimized by a professional can range price wise. Depending on the size of the job and how much time it will take to complete the job are two major factors for what you will have to pay for a proper optimization. There are many SEO companies that charge large amounts of money for a good search engine optimization job, while there are others that aren’t as expensive. Please be cautious of “cheap” scam artists that are simply trying to take all of your money without properly optimizing your web site with keywords and phrases.

A search engine optimization analyst should be able to scan a web site to see what is included and what aspects are missing SEO wise. They should understand that it is very important to make sure that your web site includes the following aspects:

• Submitted to all major search engines
• Includes the correct keywords and phrases
• Good page titles, meta keys, meta descriptions, and tags are added
• Well-written and organized content

Search engine optimization is considered a process rather than an action. A good SEO job should increase your current page rank of zero to 3 within two months and even higher within 4 to 5 months.

Pay-Per-Click Ad Descriptions

You have recently chosen the appropriate keywords and phrases for your web site. It is now time to put them to work. Your entire Pay-Per-Click campaign should give you the chance to properly place ads in places that your target audience is more than likely to see them. Every Pay-Per-Click campaign company is different, but the majority of them should be able to walk you through the process.

There is a big difference between designing an ad and creating one. To get the most out of a PPC ad, it is best to provide well written ad descriptions that will potentially catch visitors and persuade them to return to your web site.

A standard search engine description, the goal is to attract as much traffic to a site as possible in hopes of converting that traffic into customers. Pay-Per-Click requires a vaguely different method. You do not have to pay for unlikely prospects, so the description used in your PPC ads should be crafted to remove those who are just window shopping. It should draw in those who desire to buy your products, invest in your services, or sign-up for your newsletter.

Pay-Per-Click Ad Description Tips by CODANK Charlotte Web Design

• Include keywords and phrases in the title and description
• Research your potential viewers
• List features and benefits
• Be creative
• Keep your content organized and original

These tips can potentially increase your click-through rate and relevant listings. You will more than likely be rewarded with more clicks from consumers but also with search engines themselves.

Malicious Software 101

Malicious software was created to install, take control, and execute harmful actions on a computer without the users’ knowledge or permission. This type of software can range from viruses, corrupted web browser controls, malicious scripts, to Trojan horses.

It is common for innocent web sites to be hacked by malicious attackers. Some search engine crawlers can detect malware (also known as spyware). Often when they detect it, they will notify the webmaster by sending a warning message.

A computer virus is commonly used to indicate other types of malware, adware, and spyware programs that do not have the reproductive ability. It can only spread from one computer to another when its host is taken to the target computer. The virus is then contracted in some form of executable code.

Indexing Issues

Many web sites may be finding it difficult to get indexed by search engines. Being listed is one of the only ways that potential visitors will ever find your web site on the Internet. Searchers use different keywords and phrases to locate specific information. If your site does not include these words or phrases, chances are search engine crawlers will not index you.

By not adding proper keywords and phrases to your web site, there are also other aspects that may be holding it back from being indexed. You may experience some problems that should be fixed before or after submitting your site.

Issues you may be having with website crawlers:

Design and technical issues can prevent crawlers from indexing your web site. If you are unsure of what to do, it is best to hire a search engine optimization professional who is aware of how to improve your current position.
New websites have been indexed – search engines continuously crawl different web sites, so your current ranking may drop from the index.
Your web server is not connecting to the Internet or your web site is not available.
Your site may be outdated, which can lead to deletion. Also, be careful when choosing other web sites to link with. If their links are outdated, it may reflect badly on your rankings.
You have a slow connection.
Search engines may crawl your web site too often. You can use the 'Crawl-delay' parameter in your Robots.txt file to set how often they can visit your site.

Guidelines for Successful Indexing

Successfully indexing your web site to different search engines is very important because it is the only way that your potential visitors will be able to find you. Actually submitting your web site is simple, but having the search engine index you requires effort.

As a designer or webmaster, there are a few guidelines that will assist in successful indexing. CODANK Charlotte Web Design recommends following the guidelines below. They might help search engines, such as Google, Yahoo, Bing and other web crawlers, effectively index and rank your web site.

Recommendations and Guidelines for Indexing a Website

Fix any broken links. If you do not fix them accordingly, search engines might now be able to index your site effectively, therefore preventing visitors from reaching all of your web pages.
Use HTML codes that are well organized. Be sure to include proper tags that are closed and links open the correct web page.
Keep all URLs short and simple. Shorter URLs make it easier for search engines to crawl and also for visitors to remember. Tip: do not change URLs often.
Include keywords and phrases in your content that visitors might choose to search with.
Include at least one type of link on each web page.
Provide a sitemap that includes all of your web pages.
Only cover one topic on each page. All pages should be a reasonable size. Any size less than 150 KB is recommended.
Make each page no more than three clicks away from the home page.

Personalized Search vs. Universal Search

Search results used to simply consist of a list of web pages. Nowadays, search engines normally provided searchers with a variety of results. Luckily, searchers have the option of filtering out the content that they do not want listed, and they have the choice of even setting the primary language used.

Personalized Search
In 2005, Google launched Personalized Search. This feature allows visitors to use their search history to receive better results. For example, if you always search for the definition of keywords and often click on results from m-w.com, Google might rank m-w.com higher on the results page the next time you look for the definition of words.

Personalized search can be done when signed in or signed out of Google. When you are signed out, Google customizes your search information that is linked to your browser, using a cookie.
When signed in, you do have the option to turn off web history and remove it from your Google account.

Universal Search

Google also provides searchers with a more flexible search option. Universal search occurs when a search engine combines listings from its images, local, video, book, and news search engines from crawling web pages.

For example, if you search for singer Michael Jackson, a universal search will list his music videos, a variety of pictures, and possibly news reports on his life and death. This universal search option allows you to view every type of search result at the same time. It is reported that a larger number of searchers prefer universal search.

Don’t Get Caught Spamming!

While planning and actually carrying out your search engine optimization strategy, there are several rules and regulations that need to be followed. Unfortunately, there are many web sites and web pages which are meant to trick viewers and search engines. This is considered search engine optimization (SEO) spam.

According to Wikipedia.org, SEO Spam (also known as Spamdexing) involves a number of methods, such as repeating unrelated phrases, to manipulate the relevancy or prominence of resources indexed by a search engine in a manner inconsistent with the purpose of the indexing system.

This type of spam works similar to that of telemarketers who call your house and won’t take no for an answer, except SEO spam fills up search engine results pages. If you are ever detected as a possible spammer, your search rankings will be punished and will more than likely be removed from search engines all together.

Below is a list of spamming methods commonly used:

Hidden Text – Text is usually the same color as the background of the page so that visitors cannot see it. The text is normally a collection of keywords and phrases.

Gateway Pages – Designed specifically to attract search crawlers but are useless to the visitors. Normally, a gateway page will have only the visible text, “click here to enter”.

Keyword Stuffing – Repeatedly placing keywords on a web site

Transparent Links – Links included on a page but are the same color as the background.

Link-Only Pages – These pages consist of nothing but links. This should be avoided by any means necessary.
