Heuristics 101

A web site should always be designed for the customer (first) and then for search engines. A company should never create a site simply to rank number one in search results. Keeping the client in mind means that the web site needs to be user-friendly – none of them should have to know much about anything in order to navigate your site.

According to Search Engine Optimization Bible by Jerri L. Ledford, Jacob Nielson created a list of ten items that when included in web site design would make a site more usable for individuals. He coined this list heuristics. This term means the ability recognize a pattern and being able to solve a problem or come to a conclusion quickly and efficiently. You can do so by using what you already know about that particular pattern.

Using heuristics is not always the most accurate way to solve a problem. It is important in search engine optimization (SEO) because it permits variations in the way that users search for specific keywords and phrases.

The heuristics list is stated below:

System status – the user should always know what is going on through feedback from the system. It should be provided in a timely manner.

User control and freedom – provided the ability to undo and redo an action due to a mistake. It is best to have back and forward buttons in a web browser.

Error prevention – design your web site with the prevention of errors in mind.

Match between the system and the real world – all systems should speak the language of the user in mind. Do not get too technical when it comes to keywords and phrases.

Website Content Do's and Don'ts

When preparing written content for you business’s web site, be sure to use the following guidelines (provided by The Truth About Search Engine Optimization by Rebecca Lieb) to help you create well-organized copy that is intended for both your audience as well as search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN/Bing, etc.):

Use proper keywords and phrases – Prior to writing any content, make sure you have thoroughly researched the keywords and phrases that are appropriate for your web site and viewers. The words should match what your target audience is typing in search query boxes when they are searching for information, products, or services.

Place keywords and phrases high on the page – Not all search engine crawlers spider their way to the bottom of a page, so use your keywords and phrases towards the beginning of a web page.

Be descriptive – Try not to refer to yourself as “our team”. Instead, say CODANK Charlotte Web Design. Use the term wherever possible.

Use phrases instead of single keywords – Not all searchers type single-word queries, so you should use phrases whenever appropriate. “Minority Business Loans” is more relevant to a searcher than “loans.”

Don’t use text as a graphic – Search engines can not read images. They only read text. When placing graphics on a page, be sure to use proper naming and tagging of the file.

Provide a physical location – Viewers and search engines need more information than “our office.” Try to incorporate a complete physical address, postal code, and phone number with area code.

Check your spelling – Do not rely on your viewers to correct your mistakes. Take the time to go through all of your pages in order to detect any errors. You do not want the “did you mean..?” message to appear at the top of search results pages!

Don't Make These Common SEO Mistakes

Properly targeting your key audience and hoping to draw them in to your web site is one of the main purposes of search engine optimization (also known as SEO). The biggest challenges in search engine optimization centers around businesses not understanding the importance of this concept. SEO can be demanding at times if you are not familiar with its practices.

According to Wikipedia.org, search engine optimization (SEO) is defined as the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site or web page from search engines, such as Google and Yahoo. This can be done via natural or unpaid search results.

It is highly recommended to hire a professional search engine optimization professional if your company is not aware of the proper practices. Doing so will save you a lot of time and patience. The cost of an experienced SEO specialist varies, and it all depends on how successful you are aiming to become.

Below is a list of the top common mistakes made by companies during their search engine optimization. The items include:

•Wrong Keywords – Choose keywords and phrases that are related to your web site.
•Images instead of Headings – Search engines need to read actual content; try to avoid posting nothing but photos and images.
•Backlink Spamming – Quality backlinks are much better than just having numerous backlinks. Before backlinking to a web site, check to see how high or low their PageRank is.
•Ignoring Title Tags – A title tag is important because it shows in the search results as your page title. Add proper title tags when creating your web pages.

Pay-Per-Click Ad Descriptions

You have recently chosen the appropriate keywords and phrases for your web site. It is now time to put them to work. Your entire Pay-Per-Click campaign should give you the chance to properly place ads in places that your target audience is more than likely to see them. Every Pay-Per-Click campaign company is different, but the majority of them should be able to walk you through the process.

There is a big difference between designing an ad and creating one. To get the most out of a PPC ad, it is best to provide well written ad descriptions that will potentially catch visitors and persuade them to return to your web site.

A standard search engine description, the goal is to attract as much traffic to a site as possible in hopes of converting that traffic into customers. Pay-Per-Click requires a vaguely different method. You do not have to pay for unlikely prospects, so the description used in your PPC ads should be crafted to remove those who are just window shopping. It should draw in those who desire to buy your products, invest in your services, or sign-up for your newsletter.

Pay-Per-Click Ad Description Tips by CODANK Charlotte Web Design

• Include keywords and phrases in the title and description
• Research your potential viewers
• List features and benefits
• Be creative
• Keep your content organized and original

These tips can potentially increase your click-through rate and relevant listings. You will more than likely be rewarded with more clicks from consumers but also with search engines themselves.

Page Titles 101

Page titles play a very important role in Search Engine Optimization. Search engine crawlers examine them first when going through the evaluation process. When a web site is being ranked for search results purposes, page titles are one of the top factors measured.

A page title is what describes the content included on a web page. They need to be assigned to every single page to better help your search engine optimization rankings. It is located in the top left corner of your web browser. Some are short while others tend to be a bit longer.

Example Page Titles

CODANK Charlotte Web Design
CMSenabled | Content Management System
Page Titles – Google Search – Windows Internet Explorer
Charlotte Pet Sitter Services
Marriage Counseling | Christian Marriage Counseling | Couples Counseling

Below are a few important factors to consider when creating your page titles:

Keep titles to 50 characters or less, including spaces. Certain search engines will only index up to 50 characters while others might index up to 150. Yet, sustaining shorter page titles will keep you in search engine results.

It is best not to use your company name in the page title. A better alternative is to use a descriptive keyword or phrase. Using keywords will help to explain exactly what is on the page. It also helps guarantee that your search engine rankings are precise.

Don’t repeat phrases and keywords in your title tags. Repetition may come across as SEO spam when a search engine crawler is examining a site, so avoid repeating certain words if possible. Never duplicate keywords in order to obtain a crawler’s attention. Doing so could result in your site being excluded from search engine listing.

Optimize Your Multi-lingual Site

How do you measure your businesses success? Once you have achieved success in your home country, does it stop there? Introducing your product or service to other countries is a great idea to consider. There are millions of web sites that are all in English, but there are also another billion people around the world who speak a different language.

Being able to provide online content for a bi or multi-lingual web site is a wonderful way to expand globally. Success is not always guaranteed and many challenges come with the task. One of those challenges is optimizing your foreign language web site. Optimizing your multi-lingual site is similar to optimizing it in English.

Another huge challenge involves making sure that all of your content is successfully translated. Not translating content correctly can affect your page ranking.

Below are a few guidelines to keep in mind when planning your Search Engine Optimization process:

Include proper link – Links both to and from your English site to your foreign language site should be included.

Apply all of the same SEO Rules – Just because the language has changed does not mean search engines or crawlers are any different.

Make language options available – Be sure to make language options clear so your foreign visitors will not miss it.

Translate existing web content – It is best to hire someone who is an expert in the chosen language.

Translate keywords – You may not be able to translate some words, so you’ll need to choose new keywords.

Don’t Overlook Your Competitors

The Search Engine Optimization phase that you conduct includes different steps. One of the most important steps you should pay close attention to is your competitive analysis. Being able to analyze your competition should be placed at the very top of your to-do list, along with site tagging and keyword analysis.

Competitive analysis can be defined as an assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of current and potential competitors. This process provides you with a defensive mechanism from any threats and also helps with any opportunities.

During a competitive analysis, you should identify the following:

Your specific industry
Your competitors
Your customers and what benefits they expect
Key success factors in your industry

When conducting your thorough competitive analysis, it is very important to not only identify your direct competitors but also ones who are indirect. Look at those competitors who are ahead of you in search engine rankings, even if they’re offerings are unlike yours.

Additional competitive analysis tips:

Page saturation: Are their pages indexed? Look to see what you should include or exclude on your site pages.

Meta data: Look at what meta data your competitors are including. How is it worded? You can access the source code of a site by selecting 'Source from the View' menu on your web browser.

Page titles: Is the sites page titles consistent? What keywords do they use, if any at all? How competition uses page titles should give you an indication of what you’re doing right or wrong with your own site.

Site rankings: Where in the SERPs is the competitor’s site ranked? Make note of the top three to five sites.

MSN/Live Search SEO Tips

MSN/Live Search is one of the top search engines on the World Wide Web, as well as Google and Yahoo. These are the major search engines in which most websites strive to reach. They tend to put a lot of time and energy in their Search Engine Optimization in order to receive high ranking results.

A search engine is defined as software that uses applications to collect information about websites. The information normally collected consists of phrases or keywords. These two are likely indicators of what is contained on the website, links into and out of the page, the URL, and the code that makes up a page. All of this information is then cataloged and stored into a database.

MSN/Live Search’s SEO Tips

How can I improve my search results?

Make sure that you spell search words correctly.
Use words that you would expect to find in the websites that you're looking for.
Search for exact phrases by placing the search words within quotation marks. For example "Charlotte Web Design".
Vary your search terms. A different word or phrase will return different search results.

Additional notes to be aware of:

Basic searches aren't case sensitive.
Common words, such as a, and, and they are ignored unless you use quotation marks around them. For example, "a" car "and" car, or "the" car.
If your search includes a date, type the name of the month instead of the calendar number.
You don't have to type the word AND between your search words. By default, all searches are AND (A search keyword that you can use to find results that contain all the search terms you specify) searches.
You can type up to 150 characters, including spaces, in the search box.

The Importance of Keywords

During your Search Engine Optimization efforts, trying to come up with the perfect combination of keywords and phrases to drive in traffic to your site can often be challenging. You must make sure that the words you choose are relevant to the content of your website or else it will affect your site ranking.

Once you have properly chosen your specific phrases and keywords, it is now time to start putting those words to work. Be sure to place each word in the correct place and use them appropriately. This will help you toward making your Pay-Per-Click campaigns successful.

When a visitor uses a search engine, such as Google or Yahoo, they typically type in a word or words and click the “search” button. The search engine then looks in its index for those words.

Suppose that you typed Charlotte Web Design. In general, the search engine looks for:

Web pages that contain the exact phrase Charlotte Web Design.
Web pages that don’t have the exact phrase Charlotte Web Design, but do contain the words Charlotte and Web Design in close proximity.
Web pages that have the words Charlotte and Web Design somewhere, though not necessarily close together.
Web pages with word stems Charlotte Web Design.
Web pages that have links pointing to them, in which the link text contains the phrase Charlotte Web Design.
Web pages with links pointing to them with the link text containing the words Charlotte and Web Design, although not together.

As a result, choosing the right keywords is critical. If a specific keyword or phrase does not appear in your pages, your website will not appear when someone enters those keywords into the search engine.

The Most Common Search Engine Optimization Mistakes

Search Engine Optimization can be very tricky when not done the correct way. One of the biggest challenges in SEO is the fact that people don’t realize its importance when drawing in traffic to a web site. Uninformed marketing specialists can easily make decisions that can harm the entire purpose behind Search Engine Optimization.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is defined as the process of improving the quality or volume of traffic to a web site from search engines. Unlike Search Engine Marketing (SEM), SEO does not deal with paid inclusion. The earlier a site appears in search result listings, typically the more visitors will receive them from the search engine.

CODANK Charlotte Web Design and Internet Marketing Company has put together a list of the most common mistakes made during Search Engine Optimization. The list includes:

Thin Content Pages – little to no content is present on the page
Use of Crawler Unfriendly Methods – search engines deal better with HTML text rather than Flash files
Ignoring Title Tags – a title tag is important because it shows in the search results as your page title
Poor Content Management System – a CMS should be crawler-friendly in order to be beneficial
Poor Site Promotion – marketing goes beyond just launching a site; try inbound links
Wrong Keywords – be sure to select keywords and phrases which have relevance to your web site.
Images instead of Headings – search engines need to read actual content; refrain from posting nothing but images
Backlink Spamming – quality backlinks are much better than just having numerous backlinks
Ignoring URLs – place keywords in an URL; helps with SEO
JavaScript Menus – crawlers cannot read JavaScript menus; try using a sitemap instead.

Page Relevance

Page relevance is harder to measure than other elements. The concept of page relevance is that a link from a page related in some way to your page is more valuable than a link from an entirely unrelated page. A link to your rodent-racing site from a website that is also related to rodent racing is more valuable than, say, a link from your Aunt Stacey’s personal web page.

The main setback with PageRank is that it’s independent of keywords. The value is a number of derived from links pointing at a page with no relation whatsoever to a specific keyword. A page which has a high PageRank does not necessarily mean it’s the type of page you are looking for when searching for a specific keyword.

Search engines add something else to the mix: relevance or context. The major search engines are making an effort to do this sort of analysis by matching keywords. As a result, engines are trying to create a context-sensitive PageRank or topic-sensitive PageRank. A topic-sensitive PageRank is dependent on a particular topic. Instead of counting any and all links, only links from relevant websites are included.

Ways to increase a PageRank
• Start a blog!
• Make sure you keep your content fresh and interesting.

Content is the best advertisement because if visitors love your content, then they will come back and spread the word as well.

• Use descriptive title tags.
Focus should be placed on simple, well-described page titles.
• Put your keywords in your meta tags, header, opening paragraph, and footer
• Make sure you're not inadvertently telling the search engine spiders not to index your files, via robots.txt, metas or htaccess files
• Make it easy to recommend your site.
There are tons of scripts freely available if you do not want to write them yourself.

Multiple Versions of Your Pages: Mirror Sites

Mirror sites are beginning to be used to provide additional ways to access popular web resources. What many website publishers have learned is that if they mirror individual pages, they can draw in additional traffic to their website.

On the Internet, a mirror site is an exact copy of another Internet site. Mirror sites are most commonly used to provide multiple sources of the same information, and are of particular value as a way of providing reliable access to large downloads. Mirroring is a type of file synchronization.

To give mirrored pages greater importance, website publishers keep their pages short and try to use nothing but text descriptions and keywords. They often use different descriptions and keywords to alter the pages to specific audiences and search engines and then save the pages with unique names. For example, pages may be named in sequence, such as index1.htm, index2.htm, index3.htm, and so on. Once finished, each single page is registered.

Search engines and directories look favorably on any website that tries to manipulate things in this manner and visitors often don’t appreciate being redirected like this. The bottom line here is not to use this trick!

Are You Linked In: Basic Rules About Links

You know that links are valuable and can help boost your position in the search engines. But, what sorts of link? Let’s go over a quick summary:

· Links from sites related to yours are often more valuable than links from unrelated sites. (Because the relevancy software is almost certainly imprecise, this isn’t always the case.)
· Links from pages with a high PageRank are much more valuable than pages with a low PageRank.
· Virtually all incoming links to your site have some kind of value, even if the pages have a very low PageRank or are not contextual. It may not be much of a value, but it is there.
· The more outgoing links on a page that has a link pointing to your site, the lower the value o the link to your site. This is because the vote is being shared. Thus, in some cases, a link from a low-PageRank page with no other links may actually be more valuable than a link from a high-PageRank page with many links.
· Links are even more valuable when they include keywords because they tell search engines what the referenced site is about.
· A link strategy that positions your site as an authority, or a hub, in a web community or neighborhood can be a powerful way to get the attention of the search engines.
· Even internal links – links from page to page within your site – are valuable because the keywords in the links tell the search engine what the referenced page is about.

Powerful Not Weak: Page Titles

Within search engine optimization, page titles are one of the most critical elements. When examining a site, which is done by search engine crawlers, the first part that it looks at is the page titles. When your web site is ranked in search results, titles on pages are again one of the top elements measured. Therefore, when a web designer and copywriter are constructing content for a site, they need to create good page titles.

Here are some of the key factors to take into account when creating your page titles:

· Try not to use your company name in the page title. A better alternative is to use a descriptive keyword or phrase. Using keywords will help to explain exactly what is on the page. It also helps guarantee that your search engine rankings are precise.

· Make an effort to keep titles to 50 characters or less, including spaces. Certain search engines will only index up to 50 characters while others might index up to 150. Yet, sustaining shorter page titles will keep you in search engine results.

· Do not repeat phrases and keywords in your title tags. Repetition may come across as SEO spam when a search engine crawler is examining a site, so avoid repeating certain words if possible. Never duplicate keywords in order to obtain a crawler’s attention. Doing so could result in your site being excluded from search engine listing.

· It is best to consider using special characters in the beginning and end of your title to increase notice ability. Characters such as, parentheses (( )), arrows (<< >>), and asterisks (****) often help to catch a viewer’s attention to your title page.

If your page titles are not tagged properly, chances are you should not even use them. Take the time out to ensure that your titles are short, descriptive, and tagged into your web page coding. By using title tags, you are increasing the likelihood of ranking high in search engine results.

Be Careful What You Choose: Keywords & Phrases

When you choose to use keyword marketing to optimize your company’s web site, you may run into a few problems. Despite your best efforts, it is probable that the keywords and phrases you have selected are not producing the results you expected – traffic is not flowing in like it should. On the other hand, certain words that have worked in the beginning may just stop working for you. You can tell when this occurs because the numbers associated with your keywords and phrases decrease without warning.

There are many factors that can transpire and cause certain keywords to quit being as effective as they were in the earlier period. It isn’t always your fault, but you should always try to develop concepts, test, and implement new keywords for you PPC programs and for your web site.

Trying to come up with the perfect combination of keywords and phrases to drive in traffic to your site is one of the biggest challenges of SEO. It is not something that you just jump into one day and then expect to be successful. It’s better to start off slow and build your way to greater success.

Brainstorming and asking potential visitors what they look for when searching the Internet is one way to build a winning keyword strategy. You can also include all of the suggested words and phrases by keywords suggestion and search engine tools. Make sure that the words are relevant to the content of your web site or else it will affect your site ranking.

Once you have narrowed your specific phrases and keywords, it is time to start putting those words to work. Placing the keywords in the right place and using them properly will help you toward making your PPC campaigns successful.

Keyword Tips:
· Create a keyword list
· Combine and analyze the results
· Pick your keywords and use them on your web site

SEO Make or Break?

One of the most valuable tools a company can have for advertising is a good SEO, or search engine optimization. When someone seeking information enters a search engine term on his or her favorite search engine, being as close to the top as possible is extremely important. For this reason, SEO is a huge market today and should never be underestimated. Here are a few things to consider when it comes time to optimize your website for search engines.
1. Find which keywords you want to exploit. Use a good keyword tool such as the Google Adwords Keyword tool featured in a previous blog. Finding these keywords is absolutely essential. You’ll want to stick with two kinds of words, ones that highlight your niche, and ones that get searched most often. “Charlotte North Carolina Web Design” is an important search term for a company of the like but it does not highlight any niche. Including the keyword “Web Application Development” may provide a more detailed and specific target if that is your niche.

2. Use a good domain. As I’ve written in a previous blog, finding a good URL is essential to your business as it is what the potential customer first thinks about when they consider visiting your website. Having a URL that matches your product or service definitely improves your SEO.

3. Use links. Link to other related sites in your industry. This does not mean provide a way for viewers to skip over to the competition. For example, if you sell snowboards, link users to an informational site on how to choose the right snowboard or a social networking site designed for snowboards. Get creative!

4. Write Articles. Putting out free information is what the Internet is all about. If you have valuable skills or information, people from all over the globe are going to be flocking to your page. Since you will be writing the article about something very similar to your product or service, search engines will have more and more keywords to go by. This doesn’t necessarily mean people will immediately buy your product, but it is a very valuable way to get a network started and gets the search engines working for you.
In this fast-paced, web centered economy, search engines are one of the most important tools for advertising. It can be overwhelming but done properly, a good SEO will take your company places you never imagined. At CODANK, we’ve helped countless with SEO strategies and we can help you too. Give us a call to talk to one of our SEO specialists today.
