It is very fortunate for the businesses that are beginning to understand the importance of blogging. The overall idea of blogging makes a lot of sense when you look at it from a marketing and advertising point-of-view. Submitting articles or blogs helps link a company’s web site, encourage potential clients to seek more information regarding them, and gives a business the chance to reach people around the world.
By definition, a blog is a type of web site that includes recurring entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics and video. Most blogs display entries in reverse-chronological order (with the most recent being the first). Often used as a verb, the word “blog” also means to maintain or add content to an actual blog.
A lot of companies prefer to use blogs because it allows them to meet their customers more directly. Unlike flyers or electronic messages, a blog is more interactive and can be visited more frequently.
Search engine optimization professionals recommend that a company post a new blog each day or weekly. Customers and clients like to see updates; it makes them believe that you are serious about your business.

Where Do Online Users Search?
The World Wide Web has granted users the opportunity to find basically any and every type of web site that is online. Accurately, there are thousands of search engines, such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN/Bing, which provide the ability to search the Web.
The greater part of online searched are carried out at a small number of search web sites. A great question to ask is, how do the most popular sites rank? The answer depends on how you measure popularity. The term can be measured based the following criteria:
• Total amount of searches conducted
• Total amount of time visitors spend searching at the site
• Total number of site guests
• Audience reach (percentage of site visitors)
All of the above measurements tend to provide slightly different rankings. Below is a list of the Internet’s most popular search sites. The results are based on one month of searches during August of 2007. The study was conducted by Nielson/NetRatings. Roughly 8 billion searches in the U.S. were recorded. The results include:
• Google.com – 53.6%
• Yahoo.com – 19.9%
• MSN.com – 12.9%
• AOL.com – 5.6%
• Ask.com – 1.7%
• My Web Search – 0.9%
• BellSouth Search – 0.5%
• Comcast Search – 0.4%
• My Way – 0.4%
• SBC Yellow Pages Search – 0.4%
Be advised that this is a list of search sites, not search systems. In some cases, the sites own their own systems. Google supplies its own search results, however AOL does not. My Web Search is a metasearch engine receiving results from Google, Yahoo, and Ask.com.

Follow The Rules: Unethical SEO Practices
Practicing search engine optimization (SEO) is more than simply posting your very own web site. SEO professionals are urging businesses and entrepreneurs to begin learning the ins and outs of site rankings, page tagging, search engines and other important SEO elements. Failing to educate yourself is an easy way to fall victim of unethical SEO practices.
Illegal SEO practices can cause a web site to receive a low page ranking or even be removed from search engines. It is best to consult with a search engine optimization professional when launching a site. This will save you a lot of time and energy on an issue that you are not aware of.

• Falsely generating traffic to your site so that it appears more popular than what it actually is. Safeguards are in place to prevent this from happening. Getting around these safeguards could place you on the banned list for many search engines.
• Submitting your web site to search engines continually for inclusion in the rankings.

Design Do's and Don'ts
A user-friendly web site should be equivalent to a search-engine friendly website. When you are designing a site, there are several rules that need to be abided. If you choose to “break” one rule, it is best to compensate in another area. Below is a list of design do’s and don’ts provided by The Truth About Search Engine Optimization by Rebecca Lieb.
The list consists of:
Avoid splash pages – A splash page briefly appears as an introductory web site home page. It tends to be graphic-heavy and text-light. These types of pages are not good because they only link to one other page within the web site.
Do not use frames and inline frames (iframes) – Avoid using frames and inline frames because they make it hard for search engines to crawl web sites. They break each page into three or more files (rather than just one).
Use clean, valid coding – It is best to use code that is lighter, cleaner, simpler, more semantically defined, and in agreement with World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards.
Avoid duplicate content – Do not place the same text content on multiple domains or within more than one page on your web site.
Avoid Flash websites – Majority of flash sites only consists of one single web page. You will not rank for dozens of separate keywords with only one page.
Utilize individual title tags – Every page on your web site should have its own distinctive title tag. No two pages should be identical.
Place graphics lower on a web page – Because search engines pay more attention to words that appear higher on a page, it is best to use graphics only near the bottom. Search engine crawlers only index words.

Website Content Do's and Don'ts
When preparing written content for you business’s web site, be sure to use the following guidelines (provided by The Truth About Search Engine Optimization by Rebecca Lieb) to help you create well-organized copy that is intended for both your audience as well as search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN/Bing, etc.):
Use proper keywords and phrases – Prior to writing any content, make sure you have thoroughly researched the keywords and phrases that are appropriate for your web site and viewers. The words should match what your target audience is typing in search query boxes when they are searching for information, products, or services.
Place keywords and phrases high on the page – Not all search engine crawlers spider their way to the bottom of a page, so use your keywords and phrases towards the beginning of a web page.
Be descriptive – Try not to refer to yourself as “our team”. Instead, say CODANK Charlotte Web Design. Use the term wherever possible.
Use phrases instead of single keywords – Not all searchers type single-word queries, so you should use phrases whenever appropriate. “Minority Business Loans” is more relevant to a searcher than “loans.”
Don’t use text as a graphic – Search engines can not read images. They only read text. When placing graphics on a page, be sure to use proper naming and tagging of the file.
Provide a physical location – Viewers and search engines need more information than “our office.” Try to incorporate a complete physical address, postal code, and phone number with area code.
Check your spelling – Do not rely on your viewers to correct your mistakes. Take the time to go through all of your pages in order to detect any errors. You do not want the “did you mean..?” message to appear at the top of search results pages!

Global Search Engine Optimization
The World Wide Web is not stuck within international borders. Definitions and descriptions between languages, countries, and sometimes search engines you have never heard of, can jeopardize the most dependable search engine optimization plan.
There are a number of reasons to consider a global SEO strategy. A company may have decided to do business across the world and language borders, in which case global SEO should become a part of your overall marketing game plan from the beginning.
For example, in certain countries, there may be a legal requirement to have two different language versions of the same website. It does not work to simply translate your existing web site and think that it’ll magically work for you. There is a lot more to global SEO.
Domain Name
One of the main concerns of global SEO is establishing a top-level domain name. Multinational companies, such as Microsoft and Apple, tend to use subfolders that section out from their top-level domain. Each brand includes a generalized version of the U.S. based .com web site. Other companies, including Google, choose to utilize country domain extensions, for example, .de or .uk. You can choose to use a combination of the two.
Language
Be sure to pay attention to not only actual content translation but also to relevant cultural context. You may have to re-optimize images, video, and other digital material to your international website – as well as meta data, names, and other on-page elements.
All global search engine optimization requires its own requirements. This concept almost always involves hiring local expertise. Invest your money and time in doing it the correct way.

Media Files 101
It is very common to come across a web site that contains beautiful image and eye catching graphics. These types of sites tend to be created more for the end user or viewer. Web designers and search engine optimization professionals should be aware that search engines can’t read anything but plain old text.
A web page can provide viewers with tons of pictures and audio files to download, but as far as search engines are concerned, they really don’t add any value to the overall web site. An essential part of any search engine optimization plan is to work to make these types of files count with respect to search visibility.
Below are a few ways to make a web pages image, audio, videos, and other media help with successfully optimizing a web site. Each tip can assist in increasing PageRank as well as search engine listings.
Make Files Accessible
Be sure that all files or directories in which your media files are stored on your server are open and easy to get to by search engine crawlers. None of the files should be blocked by a robots.txt file.
Suggestion: Do not place a “click to enlarge image” link inside a JavaScript link. Search engines cannot retrieve the larger file.
Name All Media Files
Each file should have a clear, descriptive name or title. Do not use the default name, such as img28474.jpg. Each name should be as expressive as possible and should match what the file represents.
Suggestion: If you have an image of an water bottle, call it a “Purified Dasani Water Bottle” or “16.9 fl oz of Purified Water”, not just simply “water bottle.” Search engines can mistake the water bottle for something totally different from what you are referring to.
Add Meta Data
Once you have added names to each file, it is now time to include more descriptive text to the “alt” attribute in the file’s tag. Meta data should be short and straight to the point, similar to creating a file name.

PageRank Algorithm
Your website’s PageRank value is one of the many important aspects of how Google determines which pages to show on their result pages. A low PageRank normally implies that you may have a few problems, while a high rank means that your page contains the necessary key factors. But, PageRank is only a small portion of what Google uses to rank your actual web page.
Search engines, such as Google, use an equation in order to formulate a PageRank. This formula is called the PageRank algorithm. The PageRank algorithm Google uses to rank a web page can be very confusing, and there is no need to even try to figure it out!
Below are a few key points that explain more about how the PageRank algorithm works:
•Once a page has been indexed by Google, it automatically has a “basic” PageRank. It is very small but it is there.
•A web page can only receive a PageRank if it has been indexed by Google. Also, links from other pages that have not been indexed are of no value.
•Linking to another page increase the PageRank of the receiving page.
•You can increase a site’s overall rank by increasing the number of pages in the site.
•The page that receives inbound links gets the greatest PageRank gain.
•By including lots of links, you can guarantee that your PageRank will be well distributed on your web site.
•A page with a high PageRank can forward that to another page only if it doesn’t split the vote by linking to other pages.

Checking on Your Website Listings
You may have recently submitted you new web site to the top search engines, such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing/MSN. It is now time to keep an eye on its progress within each search engine. Generally, you will want to know when it is listed and exactly who is linking to it.
There is a slight chance that your web site will not get listed on one or more search engines. This can be due to:
•A simple oversight
•URL was mistyped
•The search engine found some broken links or other related errors
•Engines have not crawled your web site yet
There are different ways to check on the status of your web site submission at various search engines. Because Yahoo and Google are the two most popular search engines, you will want to keep tabs on them first. But, don’t forget about Bing/MSN because it is quickly growing in popularity as well.
The easiest way to search for your page is to visit each search engine and enter the URL of your main page and other web pages that you wish to check on. For example, to see if Google search engine has listed any web pages for www.codank.com, you would enter the same exact URL into the search box. Also, be sure to check on your competitors in order to see if they are listed.
Being indexed does take some time. It is best to allow 4 to 6 weeks for your web site to appear in search engines before trying to resubmit.

Charlotte Web Design Link Tips
It is no secret that links play a valuable part in assisting the boost of a web sites ranking in search engines, such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo. Whether incoming, external/outgoing or internal, all links help you in some type of way. Read over the list below to understand links.
•A link strategy that places a web site as an authority in a web community or neighborhood can be a powerful way to catch the attention of the search engines.
•Links from web pages with a low PageRank can harm your own web site. Be cautious of these sites or you will be punished as well.
•Typically all incoming links to a web site hold some kind of significance.
•Links that your web site content has more in common work best for your ranking.
•The best kinds of links are the ones that include appropriate keywords. These words tell search engines what the referenced web site is about.
•Links from sites related to yours are often more valuable than links from unrelated sites. (Because the relevancy software is almost certainly imprecise, this isn’t always the case.)
•Try to monitor your links for proficient linking.
•When your content changes, be sure to modify links on your web site.
•It is recommended to create a link strategy and a link structure to better increase traffic flow to your web site.
•Hire a professional search engine optimization company if you are unsure about links.

•Try to monitor your links for proficient linking.
•When your content changes, be sure to modify links on your web site.
•It is recommended to create a link strategy and a link structure to better increase traffic flow to your web site.
•Hire a professional search engine optimization company if you are unsure about links.

HTML & Site Tagging 101
There are many ways to increase the chances of a web site appearing on the result pages of search engines such as Google and Yahoo. One of those methods is by using site tags. Pay-Per-Click campaigns and keywords are important, but the actual HTML tag that a web site includes is what search engine crawlers collect a majority of a site’s information.
Well-written content is vital for an effective search engine optimization plan. The content that is added to a web site is associated with the user interface portion, while HTML is the crawler-facing portion. The tagging that manages a web page is what effects a business’s search engine optimization ranking. No visitor is capable of seeing the HTML’s, but if they are not present, they would never be able to view the page.
According to Wikipedia.org, a tag is a keyword or term assigned to a piece of information (such as an internet bookmark, digital image, or computer file). A tag helps describe an item and allows it to be found again by browsing or searching. Tags are generally chosen informally and personally by the item's creator or by its viewer, depending on the system.
Title tags are said to be the most important SEO tag for any web site. Placing the right keywords in a title tag can increase its effectiveness. Search engine spiders and crawlers use title tags for determining the web page topic. A proper HTML tag can inform search engines a substantial amount of information about a web site.

Common SEO Mistakes
A variety of small to large companies often seem to experience the same obstacles when going through their search engine optimization phase. Business-to-business marketers tend to fall behind in terms of methods and adoption of new marketing tools.
More and more marketers are beginning to take advantage of the high quantity and quality of business-to-business leads that often come from actually setting a search engine optimization plan. Innovative SEO programs have been made available to help companies prosper.
Unfortunately, there has been a mix of common mistakes that a lot of companies have made over time. Below is a list of the top common mistakes and different ways for new businesses to avoid them.
Content cannot be reached by search engines – your web site will perform poorly in search results if their crawlers are not able to conduct a thorough search. These crawlers need to be able to locate all of the links and content in order to index any web site. To avoid this mistake, be sure not to use complex URLs, use a 301 redirect to direct visitors from old pages to new pages, provide a navigational method.
No updated content – providing not only visitors but search crawlers with new and updated content is a great way to achieve high search rankings. Visitors need to know that you are serious about giving them current content.
Using keywords that aren’t customer-friendly – what a potential customer might type into a search box, such as Google or Yahoo, is what helps you and your web site be found. You should use these keywords and phrases to better optimize your site. Do not only use words that you think are correct. Conduct thorough research in order to locate the correct terms.

Correctly Structuring Your URLs
Structuring your web sites URL correctly is very important. Both search engines, such as Google and Yahoo, and search engine users take URL structure into consideration when they make decisions about your web site’s significance and authority.
A URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is defined as a subset of the Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) that specifies where an identified resource (web site) is available and the mechanism for retrieving it.
URL Examples
http://www.codank.com
http://www.codank.com/blogs/
The way that you structure your URL can affect both your rankings as well as the percentage of people who click your link, as known as click-through rate. Search engine optimization professionals suggest placing relevant keywords into page URLs. These relevant keywords should be associated with the written content seen on the page.
All URL structures should be organized and labeled appropriately. For example, if you are an art store, your web site’s urban art section should be located at www.example.com/urban, and your web site’s pastel paintings should be located at www.example.com/pastel.
Structuring your web site as stated above creates an easy, organized, user-friendly web site navigation system. Search engines can easily located your content-rich page and relate it back to its parent category. Users of search engines prefer to view clean, well-structured URLs when searching for a page.
Having a well thought out and organized URL structure can also open doors for other advertising campaigns. These campaigns can include paid search, or pay-per-click (PPC), advertising campaigns.
To learn more about structuring URLs correctly, be sure to read Search Engine Optimization by Kristopher B. Jones.

Selecting Keywords 101
Choosing phrases and specific keywords which are appropriate to the specific services, products or content of each page of your web site is a critical aspect of search engine optimization (SEO).
There are two types of general or generic keywords. They consist of one of two keywords in length. They are referred to as:
Long-tail
Head terms
More specific keywords and phrases that consist of three or more words in length are commonly considered tail terms.
For example, the keyword “design” could be considered a head term or long-tail; the keyword “charlotte web design” could be considered a tail term.
Between the three types of keywords and phrases, head terms typically generate the most traffic. Tail terms normally send much less traffic flow, but often convert at a higher rate than head terms.
Trying to come up with the perfect combination of keywords and phrases to drive in traffic to your site is one of the biggest challenges of SEO. It is not something that you just jump into one day and then expect to be successful. It’s better to start off slow and build your way to greater success.
Tips for Selecting Keywords
Select keywords that are consistent with the content of each page
Place head keywords on the home page
Optimize each page, not just a web site as a whole
Place one or two target keywords in the title tag of a web site page
Focus on writing content that ranks well in search engines for long-tail terms

Designing an Effective Sitemap
Designers typically create sitemaps to either function as an outline or index of an entire web site. All sitemaps should be structured similar to the actual web site structure. You should begin with your home page and build out from there with all of the pages linking to it. Be sure to link all of the major subsections plus your About Us page and privacy policy page from the home page.
Each subsequent page should be placed and categorized under that subsection in your sitemap as well. It is suggested to name the sitemap either sitemap.html or sitemap.php. These two names help the search engines recognize that the file is indeed a sitemap.
Automatic sitemap generates are available. A popular generator is XML-Sitemaps.com. It helps automate the process of producing a sitemap. It is free and easy-to-use. XML Sitemaps generates an HTML sitemap that you can place on your web site.
Benefits of having a Sitemap
Easier navigation for site visitors
Potential advertising value
Encourage greater traffic to your site
No page would be left unturned
A sitemap gives visitors a place to find what they are looking for without getting lost in the navigation on the web site. No matter how organized and well designed your site is, some visitors may find it hard finding exactly what they are looking for.
As your web site grows and you add new pages, be sure to add those pages to your sitemap. Search engines normally reward web sites with new and up-to-date content.

Link Buying 101
Link buying is a practice that has been used by many search engine optimization firms. It is a great way to build quality links. A small business or entrepreneur can effectively increase their link building efforts by tactically buying links on other web sites.
Link buying is the practice of paying for specific link placements on web sites in an attempt to improve web site traffic and raking within the search engines.
If you are not aware of how link buying works, link brokers are available to assist you in your endeavors. Link broker networks provide businesses with proficient ways of buying links. They act as intermediaries between web site owners and advertisers. Link broker network membership is free. Requirements include:
Name
E-mail
Telephone number
Log-in name
Password
Also, you must have a major credit card or a PayPal account to pay for any purchases you make.
Being a registered member of link broker networks gives you the opportunity to search for links from a large database of publisher web sites. Link placement fees are typically prepaid on a monthly basis and prices range from $10 to as high as $1,000 per web site.
A major link broker network is named Text-Link-Ads.com. This network allows you to select the exact advertiser web sites you would like to purchase a link from. Tex-link-Ads.com provides important information about the host web site, including link popularity, traffic ranking, placement location, description, and availability of inventory.
A great benefit to joining a link broker network is the fact that you are able to choose your desired anchor text (relevant descriptive or contextual information about the content of the link’s destination).

Basic Web Structure
The chances of search engines successfully locating and indexing your web site all lies within optimizing its basic structure. These factors normally include:
Web site content

You should ask yourself the following questions during the web design process:
Is my site appealing to visitors?
Is my web site search engine friendly?
Web Site Structure Basics to Consider During Your SEO Process

Google Analytics 101
Measuring your web site’s success is very important and should be done by all businesses. Similar to any business, it is essential to keep track of the ups and downs of your website’s progress.
A wonderful place to being is with web analytics software. Web analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of internet data for purposes of understanding and optimizing web usage.
A very useful web analytics application for web site owners to invest in is Google Analytics.
Google Analytics is an analytics solution designed to provide companies with a view of the daily, weekly, and monthly activities of their web sites. The application is free. It gives a business a considerable edge over competitors in the pursuit for top search engine rankings.
With Google Analytics, you can do the following:
• Set and track goals – create goals in which you would like to achieve; track which keywords are properly working best for your site; determine the least effective methods
• Apply filters – exclude certain traffic from reports
• Track external clicks – negotiate link placement; track bounce rates
• Automate reporting – allows you to specify what information you prefer to be reported; you can receive information in PDF, CSV, TSV, or XML format
• Locate keywords – keep track of traffic sources to better understand which of your keywords and phrases work best for you
• Track e-commerce – keep track of your website transactions
Before you can properly use Google Analytics, be sure to create an account and then install a tracking code (which captures, collects, and analyzes information regarding visitors) on your web site.

Don’t Overlook Your Competitors
The Search Engine Optimization phase that you conduct includes different steps. One of the most important steps you should pay close attention to is your competitive analysis. Being able to analyze your competition should be placed at the very top of your to-do list, along with site tagging and keyword analysis.
Competitive analysis can be defined as an assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of current and potential competitors. This process provides you with a defensive mechanism from any threats and also helps with any opportunities.
During a competitive analysis, you should identify the following:
Your specific industry
Your competitors
Your customers and what benefits they expect
Key success factors in your industry
When conducting your thorough competitive analysis, it is very important to not only identify your direct competitors but also ones who are indirect. Look at those competitors who are ahead of you in search engine rankings, even if they’re offerings are unlike yours.
Additional competitive analysis tips:
Page saturation: Are their pages indexed? Look to see what you should include or exclude on your site pages.
Meta data: Look at what meta data your competitors are including. How is it worded? You can access the source code of a site by selecting 'Source from the View' menu on your web browser.
Page titles: Is the sites page titles consistent? What keywords do they use, if any at all? How competition uses page titles should give you an indication of what you’re doing right or wrong with your own site.
Site rankings: Where in the SERPs is the competitor’s site ranked? Make note of the top three to five sites.
